Persimmons

Six Persimmons by 13th-century Chinese Zen monk Mu Qi

Originally part of a handscroll, this famous monochrome painting of six persimmons was mounted as a hanging scroll in the 16th century in Japan, as was an image of chestnuts from the same work. Now owned by the Daitokuji Zen temple in Kyoto, both scrolls were lent to the San Francisco Asian Art Museum in 2023.

I was inspired to riff on the subject of persimmons by photographing fruit from my own tree throughout stages of ripeness—including one stage further, the dried persimmon or hoshigaki.

These digitally designed scrolls are printed on special fabric and mounted as hanging scrolls. They are water and UV resistant and may be hung outside in the garden as well as inside.
