Irritated Daruma

The artwork - an irritated-looking Daruma, painted by Liza at a workshop run by Michael Hofmann. The phrase heikō, “irritated” literally means “closed mouth”. Since Daruma is always depicted with his mouth closed, it’s sort of a joke...

chūberi - The interior patterned frame is vintage chirimen silk from a small furoshiki.

ichimonji - The gold edges at top and bottom of the artwork are from a recycled damaged old scroll.

ten and chi - The outer top and bottom frames are dark blue momigami. I experimented piecing bits of old letters (retrieved from inside a trashed folding screen) into the side panels.

finials - The decorative finials at either end of the bottom roller are ceramic.
